Transforming School Food Access Through Community-Led Action
The Coalition for Healthy Food in Newark Schools (CHFiNS) is a collaborative initiative led by Greater Newark Conservancy to improve access to nutritious meals in Newark’s public schools. Rooted in the principles of equity and sustainability, the Coalition brings together community voices, local farmers, school leaders, and wellness advocates to reimagine the school food experience for every child in Newark.
Our mission is simple yet vital: ensure that all children in our city have access to fresh, healthy meals at school by building a strong network of local support. From food education and farming workshops to improving garden infrastructure and uplifting local growers, CHFiNS is actively shaping a healthier, more just food system in our schools.
Collaborating with Partners
Working alongside organizations like Wellness in the Schools, FoodCorps NJ, The Common Market, and Urban Agriculture Coorperative, the Coalition follows the Six Pillars of Food Security: availability, access, utilization, stability, agency, and sustainability.
Whether you're a parent, educator, grower, or advocate, your voice matters. Together, we’re building a stronger Newark—one school meal and garden at a time.
