Our Mission

Cultivating Community and Wellness Through Urban Greening

Greater Newark Conservancy expands access to healthy food, environmental education, and green spaces. We provide hands-on community programs that cultivate sustainability, inspire action, and celebrate the power of nature to heal and uplift.

Our Vision

We see a future where every person in our community feels connected to nature, has access to fresh, healthy food, and can learn and grow in green, welcoming spaces. We believe that through nature, healing happens, hope grows, and stronger communities take root.

Our Roots

A Legacy of Growth and Community

Founded in 1987 as a community gardening initiative, Greater Newark Conservancy has grown into a leading force in urban agriculture, environmental education, and community wellness. For nearly four decades, we've empowered Newark residents by transforming vacant lots into thriving farms, educating thousands of students through hands-on environmental field trips, and increasing access to fresh produce through farmers markets, CSA programs, and mobile farm stands.

With more than 40,000 individuals served to date, our Urban Environmental Center and Outdoor Learning Center serves as a dynamic hub for youth development, nutrition education, and school garden support. We've led citywide greening efforts, job training through the Newark Youth Leadership Project, and food advocacy through initiatives like the Coalition for Healthy Food in Newark Schools.

From the fields and raised beds of our urban farms to the classrooms of Newark schools, our work is rooted in the belief that healthy communities grow from the ground up—one garden, one family, one child at a time.
